GREECE SERIES

1901 BY H. C. WHITE CO

100 Stereographs

To those who have respect to “the glory that was Greece”, who appreciate that which is of highest historic and artistic value, this travel series will appeal irresistibly. Interwoven with the Greece of to-day are ever recurring glimpses of that glorious past of artistic and intellectual supremacy which has made Greece the instructor of all the world for ages. Classic Athens, though despoiled of many of her choicest treasures of sculpture and art, yet rears her immortal Acropolis altar crowned with the ruined splendor of her most glorious examples of architecture and sculpture, and throughout the city the enduring triumph of Greek art is everywhere manifest. From Athens to the monasteries of North Greece is a leap of several centuries in point of time. Perched on their inaccessible cliffs, these relics of mediaeval religious fervor stand out in solemn majesty, still housing their monks though few in number. Not less interesting are the ruins of Olympia, Epidaurus or ancient Mycenae, while the many scenes from modern Greece, showing the peasants tilling their fields, with rude and primitive implements, or meeting in their Easter dancing festival at Megara serve to unite the past with the present.
